VIMC Mathematical Modelling Short Course 2027

​​

Applications are now open for the 2027 VIMC Mathematical Modelling Short Course, jointly hosted by the Dengue Modelling Consortium and the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

​

The course will take place in Singapore in February 2027 and is designed for researchers, analysts, public health practitioners, and early-career scientists interested in infectious disease modelling, dengue/ arboviruses and vaccine-preventable diseases in general.

​

Over five days, participants will be introduced to the fundamental concepts underpinning mathematical models of infectious disease transmission and vaccine impact. The course combines lectures, discussions, and hands-on practical sessions using the open-source programming language R. Topics will include infectious disease dynamics, vaccination and herd protection, model fitting, uncertainty, vaccine impact estimation, and applications of models to public health decision-making.

The course is intended for participants who are relatively new to infectious disease modelling. While some prior experience with quantitative methods and programming is beneficial, the emphasis will be on developing practical skills and building confidence in applying modelling approaches to real-world public health questions.

Alongside teaching from VIMC and Dengue Modelling Consortium faculty, participants will have opportunities to engage with invited speakers from the region and to learn about how modelling evidence informs vaccine and infectious disease policy.

​

Places are limited and applications will be assessed competitively. We particularly encourage applications from researchers and public health professionals based in Asia who are interested in applying modelling approaches within their own organisations, institutions, or national programmes.

Target audience: Early-career researchers, analysts, epidemiologists, public health professionals, and postgraduate students interested in infectious disease modelling.

Funding: Funding is available to support applicant attendance and accommodation. A limited travel bursary is also available to support economy class travel.

​

Applications and deadline: Applications can be completed here and the deadline for submissions is 31 October 2026. Successful applicants will be informed in December. Due to the high volume of applications expected, we cannot provide feedback for unsuccessful applicants.

Eligibility: This introductory course is aimed at researchers, analysts, epidemiologists, public health professionals and postgraduate students based in Asia who are new to infectious disease modelling.

​

Applicants should:

• Have an interest in applying mathematical modelling to infectious diseases, vaccination or public health.

• Be able to attend the full course in person.

• Have access to a laptop capable of running R and RStudio.

• Have basic familiarity with R, or be willing to complete introductory R training before the course.

• Be able to explain how they expect to apply the skills within their research, organisation or public health setting.

 

The course is not intended for applicants with substantial previous experience in infectious disease modelling.​​​​
